Procedure

The hydrogenation of 2-(3-hydroxycinnamoyl)-1,3-cyclopentanedione as prepared in the preceding step was carried out by dissolving in ethanol in the presence of 5% palladium on charcoal at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure. 2-(3-Hydroxyhydrocinnamoyl)-1,3-cyclopentanedione was obtained in a quantitative yield, m.p 162°-165° C.
