Reaction Steps
A solution of 5.5 g of 2-aminobenzimidazole and 11.0 g of 2-(o-bromophenyl)ethyl bromide in 250 ml of xylene is heated in a nitrogen atmosphere under reflux for 18 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled and the crystals that separate are filtered and dried. This product weighs 3.7 g and is recrystallized from acetonitrile to give 3.4 g of 1,3-dihydro-1,3-bis[2-(o-bromophenyl)ethyl]-2H-benzimidazol-2-imine hydrobromide, m.p. 248°-249°.
