Procedure
Monoammonium maleate (3.00 g of 94% wet salt, 0.0212 mole) and succinic acid (.[.0,278.]. 0.278 g, 0.0024 mole) were thoroughly mixed together and then were reacted as in Example 2 and 3 by heating in a convection oven at .[.230°240°.]. 230°-240° C. for 40 minutes. A brittle, red-brown solid was obtained which weighed .[.2,204.]. 2.204 g. Hydrolysis of this product with sodium hydroxide produced an aspartic acid copolymer having molecular weights by GPC of Mw 1717, Mn 1016, Mw/Mn 1.69.
