To a stirred mixture of (2R)-1-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzoyl]-2-(3,4-dimethylbenzyl)piperazine (0.1 g) and triethylamine (0.125 ml) in dimethylformamide (0.6 ml) was added ethyl 2-methoxybenzenecarboximidate hydro-chloride (62 mg) at room temperature. The resulting mixture was heated at 100° C. for 1 hour. The mixture was poured into ice-water, and extracted by ethyl acetate. The extract was purified on a silica gel column (dichloromethane/methanol) and treatment with 4N hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate solution gave (2R)-1-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzoyl]-2-(3,4-dimethylbenzyl)-4-[1-imino-2-(2-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]piperazine hydrochloride.
