Methyl 1-t-butoxycarbonyl-4-phenylpiperidine-4-carboxylate (5.0 g) was dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid-dichloromethane (10%, 100 mL) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6 h. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a yellow gum (5.2 g), δH (CDCl3) 2.11-2.20 (2H, m), 2.64-2.68 (2H, m), 3.03-3.13 (2H, m), 3.38-3.44 (2H, m), 3.63 (3H, s), 7.18-7.33 (5H, m), and 7.98 (1H, br s).
