A mixture of 3-butyryl-4-chloro-8-(2-methylthioethoxy)quinoline (0.67 g, 2.1 mmol) and o-toluidine (0.24 g, 2.3 mmol) in acetonitrile was heated to 55° C. and stirred for 3.5 h. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was partitioned between methylene chloride and a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. The residue was triturated with diisopropylether. The precipitated product was filtered off and washed with diisopropyl ether giving 0.55 g (66%) of the title compound.
