Reaction Steps
Asiatic acid (2) is treated with diazomethane to obtain methyl asiatate (3, R3 =methyl) quantatively, which is then oxidized to give a compound of lactol structure (4, R3 =methyl) in which A-ring have been modified. The compound is treated with catalytic amount of acetic acid/piperidine to obtain methyl A(1)-norursa-2,12-diene-23-hydroxy-2-formyl-28-oate (5, R3 =methyl). [See Scheme 1]
