Thionyl chloride (1.6 ml) was added to a solution of 4-pyridine propanol (2 g, 14.5mmol) in trichloromethane (20 ml) cooled at 0° C. After stirring for 1 hour at ambient temperature followed by 1 hour at 60° C., the solvent was evaporated and the residue was triturated with ether to give 4-(3-chloropropyl)pyridyl hydrochloride as a white solid.
