Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of N-[4-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl]acetamide (Preparation 99, 12 g, 0.058 mol) in acetic anhydride (50 mL) at −5° C. was added HNO3 slowly. The reaction was maintained at 0° C. for 1 hour and then room temperature for 18 hours. The reaction was extracted with EtOAc, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (15 g, 100%).
