Tert-butyl 7-bromo-3-(1-ethoxy-1-oxopropan-2-yl)-2,3-dihydrospiro[indene-1,4′-piperidine]-1′-carboxylate (300 mg, 0.645 mol) was dissolved in 20% TFA at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1′ h at rt. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give ethyl 2-(7-bromo-2,3-dihydrospiro[indene-1,4′-piperidine]-3-yl)propanoate (235 mg, 100%). 1H NMR: (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ=0.98 (d, 3H), 1.23 (t, 3H), 1.61-1.73 (m, 4H), 2.42 (m, 1H), 2.73 (m, 1H), 3.01 (m, 1H), 3.23 (m, 3H), 3.48 (m, 3H), 3.68 (d, 1H), 4.21 (q, 2H), 7.03 (m, 2H), 7.38 (d, 1H).
