To a solution of 1-(4-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-phenyl)-ethanone (preparation 1a, 600 mg, 3.65 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (25 mL) is added tetrabutylammonium tribromide in several portions (1.76 g, 3.65 mmol). The reaction mixture is stirred for 30 min at room temperature. After washing with water, the organic layer is dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The remaining residue is dissolved in hexanes/EtOAc 3:7 and filtered over silica gel.
