To a solution of 4-benzyloxy-1-[2-(4-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-phenyl)-2-oxo-ethyl]-1H-pyridin-2-one (preparation 1c, 1.10 g, 3.03 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (20 mL) is added slowly phosphorus tribromide (199 μL, 2.12 mmol) at 0° C. The cooling bath is removed and the mixture is stirred for 1 h at room temperature. After cooling, the reaction mixture is quenched with aqueous NaHCO3 solution and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic layer is washed with water, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure.
