To 1-(4-carbazol-9-yl-phenyl)-ethanone (2.0 g) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) is added AlCl3 (3.3 g) and o-toluoyl chloride (2.3 g) at 0° C. After stirring overnight at room temperature, the reaction mixture is poured into ice-water. The product is extracted twice with CH2Cl2, and the combined organic layer is washed with H2O and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to give the residue, which is further dried in vacuo. The product thus obtained is used for the next reaction without further purification. The structure is confirmed by the 1H-NMR spectrum (CDCl3). δ [ppm]: 2.35 (s, 6H), 2.72 (s, 3H), 7.26-7.38 (m, 6H), 7.40-7.46 (m, 4H), 7.70 (d, 2H), 7.97 (dd, 2H), 8.26 (d, 2H), 8.59 (d, 2H).
