Preparation of C6H5—CH═CH—CH═CH—CO2PEG-OCH2CH(OC2H5)2: A solution of cinnamylideneacetic acid (1.7 g, 0.01 moles) and thionyl chloride (3 ml, 0.04 moles) in 50 ml of hexane were refluxed under N2 for 4 h, then filtered to remove a small amount of dark solid and the filtrate evaporated under vacuum. The residue was dried under vacuum overnight at room temperature to obtain 1.5 g of cinnamylideneacetyl chloride as a yellow solid, m.p. 51-52° C.)
