Procedure

To a solution of 3-(4-bromophenoxy)-5-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester (200 mg, 0.619 mmol) in 10 mL of acetonitrile was added iodobenzene (189 mg, 0.928 mmol), cesium carbonate (403 mg, 1.24 mmol), copper(I)oxide (5 mg, 0.03 mmol), magnesium sulfate (185 mg), and dimethylglyoxime (14 mg, 0.124 mmol). The mixture was stirred at reflux for 16 h. Then the mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was chromatographied on silica gel using an ethyl acetate-hexane gradient afforded 58 mg (23%) of 3-(4-bromophenoxy)-5-phenoxybenzoic acid methyl ester: 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 3.79 (s, 3H), 7.00-7.02 (m, 1H), 7.08-7.18 (m, 6H), 7.20-7.26 (m, 1H), 7.43-7.46 (m, 2H), 7.61 (d, 2H, J=9 Hz).
