Reaction Steps

2.5 ml of bromine are added dropwise to a solution of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethanone in dichloromethane (200 ml). The mixture is stirred for 4 hours at room temperature. The reaction medium is washed with water, with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution and then with aqueous NH4Cl solution. The organic phase is dried over Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated to dryness. The expected product is precipitated from pentane (yield=94%).
