To a solution of 4-bromo-N-{[(1,1-dimethylethyl)oxy]carbonyl}-L-phenylalanine (72.6 mmol), in anhydrous diethyl ether (550 mL) at 0° C. was added slowly lithium aluminum hydride, 95% (108.9 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred for an additional 2 h at 0° C. The reaction was then carefully quenched with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate (73 mL) which stirred at RT for half an hour. Lithium aluminium salts crashed out of solution which were removed by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated and vacuum pumped for 24 h to afford the title product as a white solid (97%).
