Reaction Steps
75 ml of methanol, 120 ml of acetone and 0.2 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid were added to 3.5 g (7.5 mmol) of N1-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-N5-dodecyl-biguanide dihydrochloride, and the mixture was refluxed for 24 hours. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (elution with a mixture of chloroform and methanol (9:1.2)), and dissolved in 70% aqueous acetonitrile. The solution was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the solvent, and the residue was sufficiently dried under reduced pressure to obtain 2.2 g of a colorless resinous solid.
