Procedure
Under the conditions of Example 7(a), 10 g. of the ethyl ester of 3-bromo-2-oxocyclohexanecarboxylic acid is reacted with 3-chloro-4-methylaniline to obtain the ethyl ester of 7-chloro-6-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole-1-carboxylic acid and the ethyl ester of 5-chloro-6-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole-1-carboxylic acid, which are separated by chromatography.
