To a solution of sodium (6R, 7R)-3-acetoxymethyl-7-(thien-2-ylacetamido)ceph-3-em-4-carboxylate (4.2 g, 10 mM) in water (50 ml) was added dichloromethane (30 ml) containing diphenyldiazomethane (2.1 g, 11 mM). The solution pH was adjusted to 3.0 over 15 minutes using 10% v/v sulphuric acid. The mixture was separated and the solvent phase washed with water (4 × 50 ml). The solvent was removed in vacuo to give the title compound (6.96 g).
