A suspension of 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (35.0 g, 0.14 mol), butyltosylate (93 g, 0.6 mol), and sodium carbonate (38 g, 0.36 mol) in 700 mL of o-dichlorobenzene was heated at reflux for 6 days. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, filtered, and the solvent was removed by steam distillation. The residue was recrystallized from isopropanol to provide 38.1 g (74% yield) of 1,8-dibutoxyanthraquinone, which has the structural formula: ##STR48##
