To a solution of 4.22 g of 8-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]-1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-8-ol of Example 3 in 120 ml of methanol is added 10 ml of 5% HCl, and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 31/2 hours. The solvent is removed under reduced pressure, and 200 ml of water and 10 ml of 5% NaOH are added. The product is collected, washed with water and dried over P2O5 and then recrystallized from 35 ml of methanol to give 2.40 g (64.9% yield) of 1-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]-4-oxocyclohexanol, m.p. 138.5°-139.5° C.
