Procedure

A solution of 2.0 g. (0.01 mole) 2-acetyl-7-chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline in 15 ml. dry chloroform is added dropwise to 20 ml. chlorosulfonic acid at ambient temperature. The reaction mixture is stirred at ambient temperature for 24 hours and then refluxed at 60° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled, poured onto a liter of ice and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase is dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and the filtrate is concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to yield the desired product.
