Procedure
To a solution of III (64.0 g, 166 mmol) in methanol (50 ml) was added 95% hydrazine (120 ml, 2.49 mol) and the mixture was stirred for 1 day at room temperature. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue, dissolved in chloroform, was washed with water and dried over sodium sulfate. The solution was evaporated and the residue was triturated with petroleum ether. A non-crystalline product obtained gave a single spot on TLC; yield 45.8 g (72%), Rf1 0.69.
