Procedure

1 N sodium hydroxide (3.92 mol) was added to a solution of XVIII (1.64 g, 2.61 mmol) in methanol (15 ml) and the mixture was allowed to stand for 2 h at room temperature. The reaction mixture was treated in the same manner as described for the preparation of IX. The resulting oil showed a single spot on TLC; yield 1.32 g (82%), Rf1 0.14.
