Reaction Steps

To 300 ml of 3-pyridine carboxaldehyde in 3 liters of 2-propanol was added 297 g of ammonium acetate followed by 398 g of malonic acid. The reaction mixture was stirred at reflux for 5 hours. The precipitate was filtered while hot and washed with 2 liters of hot isopropanol. The resulting white solid was then dried to yield 220 g of DL-3-amino-3-(3pyridyl)propionic acid as a white solid.
