Procedure
A solution of 200 mg (0.92 mmol) of 2-chloro-3-ethyl-5,8-dimethoxyquinoline in acetic acid (3 ml) and water (1 ml) was refluxed for 5 h. After evaporation of the solvent, the residue was dissolved in water, basified with 25% aqueous ammonium hydroxide and extracted with chloroform (3×25 ml). The combined chloroform layers were dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated, yielding 185 mg (100%) of 3-ethyl-5,8-dimethoxy-1H-quinolin-2-one.
