Reaction Steps
A solution of 10 ml of 37% formaldehyde in 15 ml of methanol was dropped, over a period of 3 minutes at 0° C., into a solution of 5.75 g of 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine in 10 ml of methanol. After 12 hours at 0° C., the mixture was stripped in vacuo and redissolved in 15 ml of methanol. 20 ml of 3.6N hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether was added at 0° C. After stripping in vacuo, the residue was suspended in 15 ml of 1,4-dioxane. A solution of 8.3 g of Intermediate V in 100 ml of 1,4-dioxane was added under stirring at 20°-25° C. After stirring for 8 hours at reflux the reaction mixture was cooled to 30°-40° C. 50 ml of methanol was added and the mixture was refluxed for a further 2 hours. After cooling to 20°-25° C., the resultant solution was diluted with 300 ml of diethyl ether. Stirring was continued for a further 3 hours at the same temperature. The title compound was collected by suction filtration and recrystallization from ethanol. Yield 4 g, m.p. 209°-210° C.
