A solution of 2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinepropionitrile (22.4 g, 16.2 mmol), 15% NaOH solution (40 mL) and dioxane (40 mL) was heated under reflux for 5 h under N2. The reaction mixture was extracted with EtOAc. The aqueous layer was made acidic with 6N HCl amd extracted with CH2Cl2 (5×50 mL). The organic layers were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give the title compound as a cream solid (12.4 g, 49%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 2.04 (m, 2H), 2.42 (t, 2H, J=7.9 Hz), 2.60 (t, 2H, J=6.8 Hz), 3.48 (t, 2H, J=7.2 Hz), 3.59 (t, 2H, J=6.8 Hz), 10.29 (br s, 1H).
