To a stirred solution of 2-[4-(6-Chloro-2-ethyl-5-trifluoromethyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)phenyl]ethanol (step 4 of Example 104, 3.90 g, 10.6 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL) and pyridine (2 ml) was added dropwise phenyl chloroformate (1.6 mL, 12.7 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane (50 mL), washed with water (50 ml). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by flash column chromatography eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (3:1) afforded 4.2 g (82%) of the title compound as a colorless syrup.
