Reaction Steps
A solution of compound 18 (10.1 mmol) in dimethylformamide was stirred, at room temperature for 1 hour, together with N-bromosuccinimide (10.1 mmol). A few drops of 5% aqueous NaHCO3 are added to the solution, in order to buffer it, and methylene chloride is then added. The organic phase is shaken with water, separated, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Chromatography of the residue on a silica gel column in the eluent dichloromethane/acetone (95:5) results in two zones. The evaporation residue from the slowly migrating main zone yields colorless (19) (75%) as a solid.
