Procedure

1-(3-Methoxyphenyl)-1-(4-methyl-5-thiazolyl)methanol (1 g) in dry dichloromethane (10 ml) was added dropwise to boron tribromide (1M solution in dichloromethane, 25 ml) at 0° C. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and was stirred for 15 minutes. The mixture was poured onto ice (40 g) and 0.88 ammonia (10 ml). The precipitate was filtered off and purified by chromatography to give the title compound. M.p. 181°-184° C.
