Reaction Steps
To ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-(4-cyclohexylphenyl)acetate (52 g) was added thionyl chloride (100 ml) and the mixture was refluxed for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was then concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residual oil was diluted with water and extracted with ether. The ether layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and subjected to vacuum distillation to give ethyl 2-chloro-2-(4-cyclohexylphenyl)acetate (50 g, yield 89%).
