Procedure

28.0 g (0.1 mol) of 2-methyl-3-(trichlorogermyl) butanoic acid was treated with 100 ml of thionyl chloride. The reaction mixture was distilled under a reduced pressure to obtain 27.0 g of 2-methyl-3-(trichlorogermyl) butanoyl chloride as a pale yellow portion having a boiling point of 99° to 100° C./6 mm Hg (yield: 90.4%).
