In a round-bottomed flask, 0.27 g of sodium hydroxide and 1 ml of water were placed, 3 ml of methanol was added and then 0.7 9 of ethyl p-(3-trifluoromethylheptyloxy)benzoate was added thereto, followed by 4 hours of reaction at 50° C. Then, water was added to the system, and methanol was distilled off, followed by addition of 6N-hydrochloric acid to recover a precipitated crystal. The crystal was dried in a desiccator to obtain 0.55 g of p-(3-trifluoromethylheptyloxy)benzoic acid 4 (Yield: 90%)
