Finely powdered potassium nitrate (0.11 g, 1 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 7,8-dihydroxy-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-f]quinoxaline (0.2 g, 1 mmol) in 2 ml of conc. sulfuric acid at room temperature. The solution was stirred for 1 h at this temperature and then poured into 50 ml of ice/water. After 30 min the precipitated solid was isolated by filtration and washed with water. Recrystallization from N,N-dimethylformamide/water afforded 0.13 g (53%) of the nitro compound; m.p.>300° C.; IR (KBr): 3300-2500, 1705 cm-1 ; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): 7.83 (s, 1H, ArH), 8.37 (s, 1H, ArH), 12.2 (broad s, 2H, 20H).
