Procedure
To a mixture of 10 ml of formic acid and 5 ml of formaldehyde was added 1.4 g of 17β-(cyclopropylamino)androst-5-en-3β-ol. The mixture was heated at reflux for 5 hours, the volume was then reduced to 7.5 ml in vacuo, and 10 ml of 50% (w/w) aqueous sodium hydroxide was added. The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate The solvent was then removed in vacuo and the product was purified by flash chromatography to give 17β-[N-methyl(cyclopropylamino)]androst-5-en-3β-ol.
