Procedure

A solution of bromine (146 mg) in acetic acid (1 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of compound 11 (in Table I) (285 mg) and sodium acetate (204 mg) in acetic acid (3 ml). After stirring at the ambient temperature for 16 hours, the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure and the residue dissolved in agueous sodium bicarbonate solution. After extraction with ethyl acetate, the organic layer was washed with agueous sodium thiosulphate solution, dried and filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a pale yellow solid. Recrystallization from a mixture of ethyl acetate and petroleum ether (boiling range 60°-80° C.) gave 1-(2,6-difluoro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-bromo-4-trifluoromethylpyrimidin-6-one;
