Procedure
1.85 ml of benzenesulphonyl chloride are added dropwise while stirring to a suspension of 1.2 g of 2-pentyl-1,3-benzodioxan-6-carboxamide in 10 ml of pyridine. The mixture is left to stand overnight and then the solution is extracted with 15 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide and ether. The aqueous phase is separated and back-extracted with ether. The combined organic phase is washed with 1N sodium hydroxide and then with water, dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated. The residue is treated with hot hexane. The mixture is decanted off from insoluble material and the solution is evaporated. The crude product is recrystallized once from hexane and twice from isopropanol. There is obtained 2-pentyl-1,3-benzodioxan-6-carbonitrile; m.p. 40.5°-41° C. (not liquid crystalline).
