To pyridine hydrochloride (50 g) fused at 190° C. was added 2-butyl-6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-5-methoxy-1H-inden-1-one (6.6 g). The reaction mixture was stirred at 190° C. in an inert atmosphere for 11/2 hours then poured onto ice water. The resulting solid was dissolved in ether, washed with water, dried over MgSO4, evaporated at reduced pressure then triturated with hexane (50 ml) to give 5.5 g of 2-butyl-6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-5-hydroxy-1H-inden-1-one, m.p. 159.5°-160° C.
