Reaction Steps
3,6-dimethyl-4-nitropyridazine-N-oxide (1.0 g), 0.5 mL water, 5 mL ethanol, 0.025 mL conc HCl and 1.0 g Fe powder were stirred together and heated under reflux. After 30 minutes an additional 1.0 g of Fe and 2 drops conc HCl was added to the mixture. After 2 hours an additional 1 g Fe and 2 drops of conc HCl were added and heating continued for another 5 hours, whereupon 5 mL EtoH, 1 g Fe and 2 drops conc HCl were added. Reflux was continued for 20 hours. The reaction was cooled filtered through celite, the celite washed with CH3OH and the filtrate was evaporated to give an orange oil which crystallized on standing (0.88 g yield). Used without further purification. ##STR27##
