Procedure
A mixture of the 1-benzyl-2-methyl-4,5-benzimidazoledicarboxylic acid (4.40 g, 14.2 mmol) and acetic anhydride is stirred for 5 hours at reflux temperature, cooled to 0° C. and filtered to give the title product as a pale yellow solid (3.78 g, 91.1%), identified by 1HNMR spectrography.
