Procedure

The aldehyde XXXIV of Scheme K (1.70 g, 0.0052 moles) was dissolved in 20 mls of MeOH and cooled to 0° C. under argon. NaBH4 (110 mg) was added and the mixture was allowed to warm to 25° C. Excess solvent was removed under vacuum and the residue was treated with water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated and dried (Na2SO4). Removal of the solvent on the rotary evaporator gave a residue which was chromatographed on silica gel using 30% ethyl acetate/hexane as the eluent to give 1.75 g (96%) of the title compound as an oil. NMR (ppm, CDCl3): 2.28 (3H, s); 4.65 (2H, s); 7.10 (1H, d, J=8 Hz); 7.15 (1 h, s); 7.30 (1 h, d, J=8 Hz).
