A solution of 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carbaldehyde (659 mg, 6.0 mmol), 4-amino-6-fluoroisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one (1.0 g, 6.0 mmol), and anhydrous magnesium sulfate (7.2 g, 60.0 mmol) in acetonitrile (100 mL) was heated to reflux for 2 days. The solution was filtered and the solvents were removed in vacuum. The crude product was re-crystallized from isopropanol to afford the title compound (1.068 g, yield 68%) LC-MS (ESI) m/z: 260 (M+1)+. 1H-NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ (ppm): 4.04 (s, 3H), 5.49 (s, 2H), 7.24 (s, 1H), 7.54-7.58 (m, 2H), 7.73-7.76 (m, 1H), 8.70 (s, 1H).
