4-Bromo-3-fluoro-2-nitroaniline (1.5 g, 6.4 mmol) was added to cooled (0-5° C.) solution of sodium hydroxide (96 ml, 2 M, 190 mmol) in 80 mL t-butanol. After stirring for 10 min, 5% sodium hypochlorite solution (46 g, 31 mmol) was added dropwise over 10 min. After stirring for 1 h at 0-5° C., the mixture was extracted twice with 100 mL portions of dichloromethane. The combined extracts were washed with 50 mL saturated NaCl, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated. The material was purified by silica gel chromatography using a 0-20% ethyl acetate-hexane gradient to give 1.4 g of the title compound as red oil that crystallized on standing (1.4 g, 94%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.26 (q, J=5.9 Hz, 1H), 7.14 (d, J=9.2 Hz, 1H); 19F NMR (376 MHz, CDCl3) δ −117.47; EIMS m/z 232.
