To a solution of 2,6-dimethyl benzoic acid (2.0 g, 13.33 mmol) in cone. H2SO4 (4 mL) was added 2,2,2-trifluoro-N-(hydroxymethyl)acetamide (2.1 g, 13.33 mmol). The mixture was stirred at rt for 16 h. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and stirred for 2 h. The precipitate was collected by filtration and dried to afford 3.2 g of the title product. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 9.92 (m, 2H), 7.15-7.04 (m, 2H), 4.36 (s, 2H), 2.18 (m, 6H).
