Into a 500-mL 3-necked round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of 2-((2,4-dichlorobenzyl)(methyl)amino)-1-(3-nitrophenyl)ethanone (28 g, 1.00 equiv, Crude) in methanol (280 mL), NaBH4 (6.38 mg, 0.17 mmol, 2.00 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred for 0.5 h at 0° C. The reaction progress was monitored by LCMS. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of 10 mL of acetone. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:10˜1:5). This resulted in 14 g of 2-((2,4-dichlorobenzyl)(methyl)amino)-1-(3-nitrophenyl)ethanol as a yellow solid.
