Reaction Steps

Trimethyl sulfoxonium iodide (5.19 g, 0.0236 mol) was added slowly in small portions over a period of 20 min. to a suspension of sodium hydride (0.44 g, 0.0236 mol) in dry DMSO (80 mL) at rt, stirred for 1 h, till the formation of clear solution. Then a solution of (E)-ethyl 3-(4-bromophenyl)acrylate (Intermediate A, 5 g, 0.01968), in dry DMSO (20 mL) was added slowly dropwise, stirred at rt for 30 mins. After completion of reaction, checked by TLC, the reaction mixture was poured into ice water (200 mL), extracted with EtOAc (2×150 mL). Combined organic extracts were washed with ice water (2×150 mL), brine (150 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated to get (trans)-ethyl 2-(4-bromophenyl)cyclopropanecarboxylate (4 g, 75.9%) as a green liquid. The crude is carried to next step without further purification.
