Procedure
A mixture of 4-(2′,4′-dichloro-4-ethylbiphenyl-3-yl)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylthiopyran-3,5-dione (79 mg, 0.1816 mmol) and oxone (446 mg, 0.726 mmol) is stirred at ambient temperature for 20 hours as a solution in methanol/water (1 ml, 1:1 ratio). The reaction mixture is then partitioned between water and dichloromethane, the organic phase is separated and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by preparative reverse phase HPLC to give 4-(2′,4′-dichloro-4-ethylbiphenyl-3-yl)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1,1-dioxo-thiopyran-3,5-dione (24.6 mg) as a clear gum.
