Method A. A solution of 5-(1-hydroxypropylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-[1,3]dioxane-4,6-dione (2) (2.00 g, 10.0 mmol) and 2-propynol (1.10 g, 20.0 mmol) in benzene (20 mL) is stirred at 93° C. for 3.25 h and then cooled to room temperature. After solvent removal at reduced pressure, the residue is purified on silica gel (12.5% to 14.3% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give 1.47 g (95%) of 4 as a colorless liquid.
